Organ Appeal

To sponsor a pipe - see belowOrgan Case

The church organ was built in 1931 by Messrs Abbott & Smith of Leeds.  It is located
in a striking case designed by Sir Walter Tapper.  Most of the organ pipes date from
1931 but some were retained from an earlier instrument at Whitkirk built in 1869 by
Messrs Radcliffe & Sagar of Leeds.

The instrument today has 2 manuals, 28 speaking stops and approximately
1400 pipes ranging from less than 6 inches to 16 feet in length!

A well used and valued instrument

For the last eight decades the present organ has provided music at regular church
services, major festivals, weddings and funerals.

The instrument's commanding voice enables the organ to lead the singing of a large congregation, whilst its quieter sounds
and tonal colours accompany the choir.

The organ also plays an important role in providing the musical accompaniment for many of the concerts hosted in the church
and school services.

What needs to be done?

After nearly 80 years of constant use, the time has come for a thorough overhaul of the
instrument including significant repairs to the inner mechanisms.  The work will be carried
out by J M Spink of Leeds:
Organ Stops
  • Vacuum clean the entire organ including the pipework
  • Repair and re-leather the original actions
  • Repair and re-leather the pneumatic actions to the display pipes in the organ case
  • Repair the three bellows and the wind regulator to the Pedal department
  • Repair the soundboards and the sliders
  • Clean or replace the Pedal contacts.

The total cost will be £45,000.

Once the work is complete, the instrument will be returned to pristine condition
bringing a new and exciting sound to the music.
